Policies
Organizations wishing to participate should consult our Northwest Digital Heritage Metadata Requirements (v1.0, July 2021) for basic information about what we will need for NWDH, and by extension, DPLA participation.
Your selection process and metadata creation and remediation activities should also be informed by the DPLA’s Membership IDEAS statement (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access, and Social Justice) and the DPLA's Statement on Potentially Harmful Content.
Harmful Content
Northwest Digital Heritage contains materials contributed by numerous organizations, including libraries, archives, museums, and other cultural heritage institutions (referred to as "contributing institutions"). Some of these materials may be difficult or harmful to view due to biased or graphic content. The views expressed in these materials do not reflect those of the State Library of Oregon, Oregon Heritage, the Washington State Library, or the contributing institutions.
Each contributing institution selects and describes materials for inclusion in Northwest Digital Heritage according to their own policies. This work may be done by professional librarians, archivists, curators, registrars, technicians, support staff, or volunteers (referred to as "heritage workers").
Northwest Digital Heritage does not claim ownership of any contributed items or descriptions, and our program is committed to supporting its contributing institutions in addressing harmful content and language within their collections.
Rights or Privacy Concerns
Northwest Digital Heritage aggregates and/or hosts digital items when the contributing institution has granted permission or when we believe sharing is allowed under U.S. copyright law. We strive to display a rights statement for every item, indicating what we know about its rights status. However, the copyright owner's permission may be required for certain uses. The person reusing the material is responsible for locating and clearing rights with the rights holders.
If you have any questions or concerns about the items on our website, please contact us. Include your contact details, the URL(s) of the item(s), and a description of your query. We will work with our partners to address any requests for removal or redaction.
